My Approach to Psychotherapy

I use both psychodynamic and attachment theory to guide my work with clients, meaning that I address both conscious and unconscious processes and motivations, as well as drawing on neuroscience as an evidence-based way of understanding emotional experience.

Attachment-based psychotherapy places particular emphasis on the lasting imprint of childhood experience. Attachment therapy delves into the legacy of our earliest relationships and how they continue to shape our relational expectations as adults.

A strong therapeutic alliance, built on trust, is essential for the work of therapy. I work with clients to build a relationship which can provide a safe haven at times of trouble and a secure base from which to explore all aspects of life.

Attachment-based psychotherapy is an in-depth process. It takes time to unearth all the complexities of a person’s life and history, exploring both conscious and unconscious aspects of experience and for this reason the work is open-ended. I ask clients to be prepared to commit to therapy for a minimum of six months but an attachment-based therapy may last for much longer.
